Provide comprehensive testing, treatment, and care to treat HIV and AIDS across all populations, drawing on more than two decades of experience.
As one of the first faith-based organizations to partner with the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), CMMB Haiti has helped drive Haiti’s significant reduction in new HIV infections over the last decade.
Our current project, ALESIDA2 (“Go Away, AIDS”), a continuation of CDC/PEPFAR-funded projects ALESIDA and SIDALE, supports 25 HIV service delivery sites that provide HIV testing, care, and treatment. People who test positive are immediately initiated on antiretroviral therapy to preserve their health and prevent viral transmission.
Because adherence to treatment is essential, we back patients logistically, psychosocially, and clinically—no small task given Haiti’s ongoing violence, but one we meet by staying nimble. A simple one-page agreement, our own innovation, encourages patients to take responsibility for their treatment and has greatly improved outcomes. Increasingly, medications are dispensed in multimonth quantities and delivered to patients in their communities—or even at home. Because of such innovations, people living with HIV across Haiti can stay healthy and look to the future without fear. In its leadership in Haiti’s HIV response, we have shown that high-quality treatment and support can thrive even in the most difficult environments.
